Glory Thief

I steal everyday.  Not intentionally, mind you, but I do.  I’m a glory thief. You may be one too.  You see, I take what is not mine when I fail to recognize that my participation in God’s glory is not mine to keep.  It is to be borrowed, reflected, redirected and then given back to the One for whom all things were created.

The very thought that I am invited to be around God’s glory is too amazing to fathom.  Perhaps it’s the reason we find ourselves in such a quandary, unsure of how to handle being associated with such magnificence.  And so we inadvertently become thieves, we resort to what we know best…we take.  Like a honeybee that is saturated with pollen, after mingling with a glorious flower, we carry around residual glory when we work for the King.  This glory can be given back to its Rightful Owner or it can be kept to build one’s esteem and personal legacy.

We fool ourselves, thinking we can snatch such a legacy. We want to be significant. I get that.  Our life is a mixture of faithful and selfish motives. I get that too.  In our struggle for significance we grasp for purpose.  But let me encourage all my fellow glory thieves with a few final words…

You are significant – not because of what you give, but for what you have been given: life in God’s image, redemption through His Son Jesus…participation in God’s glory.  There is no need to strive for significance or to take credit for what is not yours, but rather allow God’s Spirit to reveal the truth about how significant you are to Him and the abundance you have yet to taste.

And about your legacy: A true legacy is cultivated through obedience.  There are no shortcuts, and God will not allow His glory and credit due Him to be stolen (Is. 42:8; 43:7; Ps. 4:2).  We are obedient to bring God glory, not to receive glory.  Rather than stealing God’s glory, be obedient and set aside your legacy. The mark you will leave this world is in His hands.

As we live into our theme for the year: It’s Not About Us, take a listen to this song by Casting Crowns: Only Jesus. Below are the lyrics:

Make it count, leave a mark, build a name for yourself
Dream your dreams, chase your heart, above all else
Make a name the world remembers
But all an empty world can sell is empty dreams
I got lost in the light when it was up to me
To make a name the world remembers
But Jesus is the only name to remember

 And I, I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
Only Jesus
And I, I’ve only got one life to live
I’ll let every second point to Him
Only Jesus

All the kingdoms built, all the trophies won
Will crumble into dust when it’s said and done
'Cause all that really mattered
Did I live the truth to the ones I love?
Was my life the proof that there is only One
Whose name will last forever?

And I, I don’t want to leave a legacy
I don’t care if they remember me
Only Jesus
And I, I’ve only got one life to live
I’ll let every second point to Him
Only Jesus
